ABOUT TRACEY MACKINNON CANDIDATE FOR COUNCILLOR-AT-LARGE

About Me!: Welcome

I would first like to acknowledge the City of Thunder Bay is built on the traditional territory of Fort William First Nations, signatory to the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850. I would also like to acknowledge the contributions made to our community by the Metis people.

Tracey MacKinnon was born in Cornwall, Ontario and moved to Thunder Bay, eight years ago from Vancouver British Columbia. Tracey is a mother of four fully grown sons and proud Kokum (grandmother) of one. As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault Tracey is proof that you can overcome adversity and can utilize the experiences that you have gone through to help better a community.

Tracey was a front line support worker at Shelter House Thunder Bay and has thus seen the need in the community for improved services for mental health and drug addiction. Working from experience Tracey brings a new outlook to the issues of homelessness, racism, and poverty. Tracey has proven her dedication to the community further through her previous employment at Elevate Thunder Bay.

In her spare time Tracey volunteers as a Grandmother/Elder with organizations such as Blue Sky Community Healing Center, and the Ontario Native Women's Association. Tracey is also a Traditional Hand Drummer and has performed at the Valentine's Day Memory Walk, the Full Moon Memory Walk, Women's Marches, Walking with our Sisters, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Honouring our Stories, and the Sexual Assault Road Show. Additionally, Tracey is also a Fancy Shawl Dancer, a Thunderbird Pipe Carrier and a White Eagle Feather Keeper. Tracey was presented with the White Eagle Feather when she received her spirit name, OZhawl Beenzie Kwe, translated it means Yellow Thunderbird Woman and was adopted into the Sturgeon Clan.

Due to her on ground, practical knowledge of the city and it's issues, Tracey would make a remarkable Councillor-At-Large for the City of Thunder Bay.
